Game Play
Select an order of play and the person who goes first. The first person begins by saying any letter in the alphabet excluding X or Z. The next person continues play by saying another letter. The third person must follow the second letter with another letter, making sure not to spell a three letter word. Play continues as each player adds a letter to the word until 1) a player completes a valid word by accidentally adding the last letter of the word 2) the player gives up or 3) the player is challenged. A challenge can only be brought on by the next player in order. They would be challenging the last person who said a letter. The challenged player must then identify a word they were attempting to spell. In the event the challenged player produces a legitimate word, the challenger drinks or is out of the game depending on how you play. If the challenged player cannot produce a legitimate (and properly spelled word) they must drink.
Example 1: player 1 says “L”, player 2 says “E”, player 3 says “T”. Player 3 had the word “LETTER” in mind, but accidentally completed the word LET, so they drink. It is up to player 4 to catch this mistake before player 4 says the next letter.
Example 2: player 1 says “P”, player 2 says “E”, player 3 says “O”, player 4 says “P”, player 1 says “L”, player 2 says “T”, player 3 challenges player 2 because PEOPLT is not a word. Unfortunately player 2 had very few options, so tried to sneak in a letter hoping player 3 wouldn’t catch it.
Drinks could be assigned each time someone screws up or you can play single elimination and require each losing player to finish their beer. Start the round again, but the person who won the last round goes first.
Some additional rules:
- You cannot spell Proper Nouns (names of people, cities, etc.). It’s just to hard to validate that Nbjuti is my buddy’s name from Kenya.
- You cannot be penalized for spelling two letter words
- Words must be English or most common language of the group
- Stay away from X or Z because it usually limits the options
Have a dictionary close at hand to avoid arguments. This game is also great for long road trips without alcohol.
