Beer Pong vs. Beirut - What’s the difference?

1 ratings Rate!!
April 10th, 2009

Most articles you’ve read on the internet discuss in great detail the difference between Beer Pong and Beirut. One article discusses using a paddle, the other one talks about how it all started at Dartmouth College. The reality is, these articles were probably written back to 2005 or 2006 and a lot has changed since then. The popularity of this drinking game has transformed into a nationwide phenomenon with local beer pong tournaments sprouting up at your local bar, to a World Series of Beer Pong with a cash prize of $50,000 (at the time this article was written).

With all this publicity, the phrase or name that is winning out is BEER PONG. It’s almost like a battle between HD dvds and Blue-Ray dvds. In a couple more years, Beirut will become HD and Beer Pong will be the Blue-Ray dvds we’ve all grown to love.  While the official rules for the World Series of Beer Pong has been etched in stone by the group at Bpong.com, I am sure colleges and local games will always have their own variations.  However, I’ve played in Philly, New York, San Fransisco and Los Angeles, and I’ve yet to see anyone play with paddles.  So whether you are calling it Beirut or Beer Pong, chances are you are throwing a ball across a narrow table into your opponents table.  At drinknird.com, we’ve sided with calling it BEER PONG even though we grew up playing Beirut.  All you Beirut playing, paddle loving, rule varying people out there, it’s time to concede and get behind the official rules and name of Beer Pong, so that this game will continue to grow.
